The State Government and Brisbane City Council conduct transport and mobility studies on an ad hoc basis that are intended to inform future decisions of how roads, footpaths, bike paths and waterways should be managed for the most efficient movement of all commuters.
These studies, proposals and strategies are important for the Kurilpa Peninsular Kurilpa Futures has provided feedback on each of these.
TAMS South Brisbane 2019 is a study necessary because of the projected 203% population increase for Kurilpa 4101 (South Brisbane, West End & Highgate Hill) by 2036, a largely landlocked population and centre for the State Museum, QPAC, QGOMA, Library, Hospitals and the ever-popular Southbank. Additionally, it is a thoroughfare like an eye of the needle for Brisbane North-South flows.

What’s Next?
Brisbane Montague rd Transport Study [add link]
This was supposedly an initiative between the ward and the council, with a draft schematic of the changes. It’s in contention as to why at least some of the improvements were walked away from, needless to say the corridor is even busier.

Brisbane City Council was an earlier adopter of commercial share ride providers, traded off with exclusivity of advertising placements as well as guaranteed minimum income for the operator.. This transitioned into the e-mobility bike & scooter era with all the associated issues of shared footpaths, poorly maintained infrastructure and inconsiderate end of journey parking.
In 2020 Brisbane City Council announced a series of cross river pedestrian and bicycle/scooter crossings all with optional locations, no details of impacts on the locations or integration of the new active transport routes into the existing transport networks. There were also serious concerns about the loss of precious parkland in the landing points and loss of mature vegetation, again without remedial compensation in the immediate area.
Following the 2019 South Brisbane Transport and Mobility Study (TAMS) during the 2020 election the State member proposed to the BCC a $1m each (BCC rejected contributing $1M) joint research of specific aspects of Montague Road, which never reached agreement till members of KF pursued the state, who eventually reached agreement with the council to carry out a study. The initial community phase eventually happened over late 2023 early 2024 with a report due mid 2024 and further community consultations. That has not progressed as of mid-October 2024.
Kurilpa Futures aims to promote initiatives that are beneficial to an inclusive community and call out those that would impede that.
What’s More?
There are also many specific interest groups that are promoting improvement to mobility options who would welcome your involvement, if you aren’t already involved.
