PLANNING FOR PEOPLE

The Tree Project

Brisbane City Council’s goal is for 50% shade cover over all footpaths and bikeways by 2031.

Our goal is to deliver this plus more.

Kurilpa Futures is partnering with local residents, the Gabba Ward office and Brisbane City Council to make sure that this happens as a minimum targeting an increase of the tree canopy on the most important roads and public spaces for pedestrians and cyclists on the Kurilpa Peninsular.

We live in an active transport neighbourhood. Many of our children bike and walk to scool and to meet friends; many of our adult residents bike and walk for leisure, shopping and to work. Some of our small residential streets are so narrow that it is impossible to plant street trees but we ask those living there to plant trees in their front gardens to lend shade to the neighbourhood. But on our major roads, we can certainly make a difference for our community.

If we consider just our major roads, our current shade status would be around 20%.

Since 2021 we have been working towards this goal. This is our greening strategy.
