For the past 2 years Kurilpa Futures has been considering how to address the impacts that 2 degrees of global warming will have on the people, together with the natural and built environment, in our neighbourhood. We also have the significant loss of mature trees that has occurred with the increase in high rise development across the peninsula. We decided that an immediate priority is to plant more street trees along the roads where there has been an increase in pedestrian and cycle movement. If we don’t get more shade onto our streets they will become deserted, hot and inhospitable in the summer months. So we decided to identify opportunities to plant trees in our streets, stage by stage.
What We’ve Done and What We’re Currently Doing:
STAGE 1: Vulture Street between Boundary St and Hardgrave Road.

What You Can Do and How You Can Help
- Check out the street tree species Brisbane City Council (BCC) considers suitable for planting across the city HERE.
- If you see a tree that has been damaged or is looking unhealthy contact BCC on 34038888.
- Adopt a tree, water it and feed it occasionally.
- Share this with others – in your street, in your neighbourhood.
- Discuss caring for the trees in your street with your neighbours (residents or businesses)
- Send us a photo of the trees you are caring for, together with their street location, for our website.
- Write to the Lord Mayor and let him know how important this initiative is for our community and the climate.
- Share your ideas on opportunities to increase the tree canopy on the Kurilpa Peninsula with us via FaceBook or at our monthly meeting.
